Abstract

Islam is a religion of rahmatan lil'alamin, which cannot only be seen from ritual or theological aspects alone. Islamic organizations were born and founded to answer the needs of the people in the religious sector. This research wants to know the role of mass organizations in the field of developing Islamic education in Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through library research, with content analysis. The results of the research show that Islamic organizations were founded with the noble aim of responding to concerns and serving the needs of the community in the religious aspect. To explore more deeply religious behavior in a social context requires at least three approaches, namely a social approach, a religious approach and a psychological approach. The initial emergence of Islamic mass organizations can be grouped into three reasons, namely: first, Islamic da'wah; second, education; and third, economic empowerment of the people. These three reasons were the background to the Islamic movement at that time, because political affairs were supervised and controlled by the Dutch East Indies colonialists. The birth of Islamic religious organizations began with the existence of Jami'at Al Khair in Jakarta (1905), then Al Irsyad (1911), a mass organization of Arab descent in Indonesia, the development of Jami'at Al Khair, then the Islamic Trade Company emerged (1911), and next Muhammadiyah was born in Yogyakarta (1912), Islamic Association (1923) in Bandung, Nahdatul Ulama in Surabaya (1926), Al Jami'atul Washliyah in Medan (1930) and Al Ittihadiyah in Medan (l935).
