Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that commonly occurs in the elderly and has a significant impact on pain, function, and patients’ quality of life. To date, no pharmacological therapy has been proven to modify the course of the disease; therefore, medical rehabilitation remains the main non-pharmacological approach. This study aimed to determine the effect of medical rehabilitation on improving the quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar. This study employed an analytic observational design with a retrospective cross-sectional approach. The subjects were 27 patients with knee osteoarthritis who received treatment at the Medical Rehabilitation Unit of Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar, during 2023–2024. Data were obtained from medical records and the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the chi-square test. Most respondents were aged ?70 years (48.2%) and were female (66.7%). The majority of patients underwent medical rehabilitation (81.5%), with exercise therapy as the main modality. A total of 74.1% of patients had a good quality of life. There was a significant association between medical rehabilitation and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis (p = 0.009), with an odds ratio (OR) of 12.222. Medical rehabilitation has a significant effect on improving the quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar.
