Clinical Characteristics of Patients With Acute Appendicitis

Abstract


Acute appendicitis is one of the most common abdominal surgical emergencies and requires prompt management to prevent complications such as perforation and peritonitis. Patient demographic characteristics and length of hospital stay can provide an overview of the pattern of patients treated at a healthcare facility. However, recent data on the characteristics of patients with acute appendicitis treated at Pelamonia Hospital Makassar remain limited. This study aimed to describe the distribution of age, sex, and length of hospital stay among patients with acute appendicitis at Pelamonia Hospital Makassar in 2024. This was a retrospective descriptive observational study using secondary data obtained from the medical records of patients with acute appendicitis in 2024. A total of 35 medical records that met the study criteria were analyzed descriptively using frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that patients aged 17–25 years constituted the largest group, with 12 patients (34.3%), followed by those aged 26–35 years with 10 patients (28.6%). There were 18 male patients (51.4%) and 17 female patients (48.6%). The most frequent length of hospital stay was 4 days, reported in 17 patients (48.6%), followed by 5 days in 10 patients (28.6%). Acute appendicitis patients in this study were predominantly aged 17–25 years, with a slightly higher proportion of males than females, and the most frequent length of hospital stay was 4 days.
