Nutritional Status Profile of Children with Hemophilia
Abstract
Hemophilia is a genetic disorder that causes blood clotting impairment and can affect children's quality of life. Nutritional status plays an important role in the management of children with hemophilia as it influences treatment efficacy and complication risk. This study aimed to describe the nutritional status of children with hemophilia at "IBNU SINA" YW-UMI Hospital Makassar during the 2023-2024 period. This quantitative descriptive study involved 87 hemophilia patients who were grouped by hemophilia type, age, and nutritional status. Nutritional status was assessed using WHO growth charts for children aged <5 years and CDC growth charts for those aged ?5 years. The results showed that the majority of patients had hemophilia A (83%), while hemophilia B was found in 17% of patients. Age distribution showed that 52% of patients were in the adolescent group (10-18 years), followed by the children's group aged 5-9 years (24%). Normal nutritional status was observed in 66.7% of patients aged 0-59 months and 48.5% of patients aged 5-18 years. Overall, 26.4% of patients were undernourished and 9.2% were obese. This study provides important information regarding the variation in nutritional status among children with hemophilia and serves as a foundation for more effective nutritional intervention management. Further research with a prospective cohort design is recommended to understand the factors influencing nutritional status in hemophilia patients.
