Abstract
Gout arthritis is an inflammatory disease caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues in the setting of hyperuricemia. Demographic and clinical characteristics, kidney function, and treatment patterns need to be identified to describe the profile of patients and support appropriate management. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of patients with gout arthritis at Ibnu Sina YW-UMI Makassar Teaching Hospital in 2025. This was a descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study using secondary data obtained from medical records. All patients with gout arthritis in 2025 who met the inclusion criteria were included using total sampling, resulting in 25 patients. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequency distributions. Most patients were male (84%), and the largest age group was 46–55 years (36%). Regarding body mass index, 56% of patients were in the normal category, while 44% were classified as overweight or obese. Recorded anti-inflammatory therapies included colchicine (76%), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (56%), and prednisone (24%), while the urate-lowering therapy allopurinol was recorded in 80% of patients. Combination therapy was received by 80% of patients, with the combination of NSAIDs, colchicine, and allopurinol being the most frequently recorded regimen (30%). Tophus was found in 40% of patients, while a history of recurrent attacks was recorded in 28%. Elevated creatinine levels were found in 61.9% of male patients, whereas all female patients had normal creatinine levels. This study demonstrates that patients with gout arthritis at Ibnu Sina YW-UMI Makassar Teaching Hospital in 2025 were predominantly male, with variations in body mass index, tophus, recurrent attacks, kidney function, and treatment patterns.
