Abstract

Genu osteoarthritis (OAG) is a degenerative joint disease influenced by mechanical and metabolic factors. Uric acid levels may be associated with inflammatory and metabolic processes accompanying OAG; however, the relationship between uric acid levels and the clinical characteristics and severity of OAG remains inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze the association of uric acid levels with age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and OAG severity based on the Kellgren-Lawrence classification among patients with OAG at Ibnu Sina Hospital Makassar in 2026. This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design and included 41 patients with OAG. Uric acid levels were measured from capillary blood using a GCU meter, while BMI was obtained from anthropometric measurements and OAG severity was determined from medical records based on the Kellgren-Lawrence classification. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test. Hyperuricemia was identified in 21 patients (51.2%), while 24 patients (58.5%) had Grade 3–4 OAG. A significant association was found between BMI and uric acid levels (p=0.014), with all patients classified as obesity class II having hyperuricemia. No statistically significant association was found between uric acid levels and age (p=0.342), sex (p=0.277), or OAG severity (p=0.208). In this study, uric acid levels were associated with BMI but were not statistically associated with age, sex, or OAG severity. These findings should be interpreted in consideration of the limited sample size and cross-sectional design.
